I am a big fan of beating the last year to a pulp... im also a big fan of pinatas. this combination is fantastic and may have to become a cathartic ritual in the years to come!!!!
They do the same in Ecuador. Some people make the Años Viejos themselves, others buy them, some are huge, others small... The nice point is that they carry them on their cars or motorbikes days before the 31st, and take them around the city -I was in Guayaquil-. On the 31st, at midnight, they burn them to get rid of all the bad that hapenned during the año viejo. I loved it!!

New Years Eve pinatas ... oooh, I like it! You could fill 'em with Mardi Gras beads and jello shots.
